There is so much to see and do in London. One of our personal favourites is to catch a show in the West End. Some of the shows are new, others have been running for years and are still as popular now as they have ever been. Here is Home From Home’s top 10 musicals to see in London (this caused much debate in the office).
Oliver – CONSIDER YOURSELF AT HOME! Cameron Mackintosh presents his triumphant new staging of Lionel Bart’s masterpiece Oliver! at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. This is a new version of an all time classic. Macintosh vividly brings to life Dickens’ timeless characters with its ever-popular story of the boy who asked formore.
Chicago – Chicago tells the tale of Roxie, a chorus girl who has murdered her lover but manages to get acquitted with the help of sleazy lawyer Billy Flynn. She teams up with murderess Velma to form an unusual nightclub act. The all-singing, all-dancing show makes for a great, toe-tapping night out!
Mamma Mia! (The girls at HFH forced this one through) – A mother. A daughter. Three possible dads. And a trip down the aisle you’ll never forget. More than 10 million people all around the world have fallen in love with the characters, the story and the music that make Mamma Mia! the ultimate feel-good show.
The Phantom Of the Opera – Andrew Lloyd Webber’s epic musical The Phantom of the Opera tells the tale of the phantom that terrorises the Paris Opera to make his protégé Christine the leading lady of the opera. This long-running show is a must see
Billy Elliot – Acclaimed adaptation of the popular British film, Billy Elliot: The Musical features music by Elton John. It’s the moving story of a boy who falls in love with ballet and fights to prove his doubters wrong.
Grease – (this one gets Richard in our office singing every time) – The feel-good family show returns to the West End this summer, bringing with it the famous hit songs from the movie including You’re The One That I Want, Grease is the Word, Summer Nights, Hopelessly Devoted to You, Sandy and Greased Lightnin’.
Les Miserables – This international award-winning musical sweeps its audience through an epic tale of passion and destruction, against the backdrop of a nation in the grip of revolution. A spectacular adaptation of Victor Hugo’s masterpiece, it continues to thrill audiences night after night.
The Lion King – The award-winning adaptation of Disney’s film features music by Elton John and Tim Rice, plus outstanding costumes and special effects. S et against the majesty of the Serengeti Plains to the evocative rhythms of Africa, The Lion King will dazzle all ages.
We Will Rock You – Ben Elton and the remaining members Queen bring you We Will Rock You, London’s most vibrant musical. Set in a futuristic world where rock music has been banned, it’s up to Galileo to save the world!
Dirty Dancing – The classic songs, the cheesy script, the dirty dance moves: you remember them all from the film. Well, Baby is back, but this time on stage! Have the time of your life with a trip to see this fantastic London dance musical at the Aldwych Theatre in the West End.
