Group homestays in Cambridge
Cambridge
Cambridge is a university city in Cambridgeshire, England. It lies about 50 miles (80 km) north of London. The River Cam running through the city centre is used for boating. The University and its colleges are well known for rowing and organises competitive rowing on the river.
Cambridge’s main traditional theatre is the Arts Theatre. The theatre often has touring shows, as well as those by local companies. The Cambridge Corn Exchange Is used as an arts venue, hosting theatre, dance and music performances. Cambridge is home to many libraries, major art galleries and museums containing all kinds of exhibits from Science and technlogy to Archaeology, zoology and all eras of history.
Trinity Street continues north as St John’s Street, and south as King’s Parade and then Trumpington Street. The street is named after Trinity College. St Michael’s and St Mary’s Courts in Gonville and Caius lie across Trinity Street on land surrounding St Michael’s Church.
King’s Parade is a historical street which continues north as Trinity Street and then St John’s Street, and south as Trumpington Street. It is a major tourist area in Cambridge, commanding a central position in the University of Cambridge area of the city. King’s College dominates the scene with the east end of its large Chapel on view. Also on the street is the University of Cambridge Senate House, mainly used for degree ceremonies. This area is known as Senate House Hill. Opposite the Senate House is Great St Mary’s, the historic University Church.
Silver Street links Queen’s Road to the west with Trumpington Street to the east. The road continues west out of central Cambridge as Sidgwick Avenue. At the southwestern end to the south is Darwin College. Halfway along to the north where the street crosses the River Cam on the Silver Street Bridge. Also along Silver Street is St Catharine’s College. To the north are The Backs along the river, providing one of the best views in Cambridge of the backs of some of the most historic and prestigious Cambridge University colleges.
Transport
Rail
Cambridge railway station has direct rail links to London which terminates at London King’s Cross and Liverpool Street. There is a non-stop train to King’s Cross every half-hour, with a journey time of 45 minutes. Trains also run to King’s Lynn and Ely, Norwich, Leicester, Birmingham, Peterborough, Stevenage, Ipswich and London Stansted Airport.
Buses
Cambridge has several bus services into the centre of Cambridge from St Ives, Huntingdon, Peterborough and other towns and villages along the routes. Another service continues on to the railway station and Addenbrookes, before terminating in Trumpington.
